You barrel ahead in a straight line, but in the end your Fall Guy succumbs to another competitor right beside them. You didn't qualify, but you were so close. What you could have used was a boost in running speed.

How to run faster in Fall Guys

Unfortunately, there's no magic button to press to get a speed boost in Fall Guys. If there were, you can bet it would be abused in seconds to secure some last-minute victories.
What you can do, however, is learn to dive efficiently. Every Fall Guy around you will be running, usually in the same direction, at the same speed. Nothing you do will allow you to move faster than them, so you've got to use the tricks at your disposal to take the crown.
How to dive in Fall Guys

Since there is no way to traditionally give yourself a boost of speed in Fall Guys, diving is the next best thing. You can dive to gain ground, knock other players away from you, or use it as a Hail Mary to cross the finish line seconds before another player does.
All you need to do is jump (Space Bar on PC and X on PlayStation 4) and then dive (CTRL on PC or Square on PlayStation 4) ahead in the same direction your character is already facing. Of course, diving isn't a cure-all for falling behind or bouncing around until you fall down. You'll have to use it strategically if you want it to give you any advantage like running faster would.
